Acclaimed on publication as a contemporary classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and Lucille, orphansgrowing up in the small desolate town of Fingerbone in the vast northwest of America. Abandoned by a succession of relatives, the sisters find themselves in the care of Sylvie, the remote and enigmatic sister of their dead mother. Steeped in imagery of the bleak wintry landscape around them, the sisters' struggle towards adulthood is powerfully portrayed in a novel about loss, loneliness and transience. Featuring authors like Marilynne Robinson and Jeffery Eugenides, they're the kind of books you'll have to own the entire set of, because they're just that pretty -- and it happens to be lovely that they fit in just about every bag you own. You can't be caught anywhere without a book, of course. This may be why the novel has this searching characteristic to it, why Sylvie cannot find contentment in a sedentary existence, and why Ruth in the end too seems to long to wander this world. Housekeeping appears to be a metaphor for forcing and maintaining structure that is unnatural to our state of impermanency. This is a book about transience, family, and memory all bleeding together, about static society attempting to constrain a nonstatic world, and about the pressures of conformity and normalcy when the world is still in flux.

One of the things I like best about the book is that the subject matter can be heavy, but it is written with a light touch and in sentences that seem to move like a wave across the page. One must read slow.

In an erratic series of misfortunes, Lucille and Ruth are passed on from their mother's hand to their grandmother's to their great-aunts' and, finally, to their mother's little sister's: Living in their late grandmother's house, Sylvie's debut carries an unusual air of awry and enigma.

Initially, Lucille and Ruth accepted their lot with Sylvie and thumbed down any resistance, fearful that Sylvie would uproot and leave--by abandonment or death--like the others prior.

Yet, for Lucille, Sylvie's 'transient' way of 'housekeeping,' or facing reality, was too ineffective and suffocating. Thus, with ambitious rigor, Lucille paved her own path, leaving Ruth and Sylvie in the dust. However, Ruth found powerful affinity in silence, waiting, seeing, hearing, and being.

Complex but beautiful prose. One must read slow, especially the long descriptions. Let Marilynne Robinson teach you how to sense the divine in nature. This is a really good debut novel authored by Marilynn Robinson. It was published in and is a fictional work set in an undetermined time, probably the later s, in a northwestern State, possibly Idaho. The story revolves around three generations of women in a single family.

There are parts of this novel I really enjoyed very much. It is extremely well written, however it is not always an "easy read".

There were some phisophical passages that I really struggled to follow. This is not necessarily a criticism. But as a reviewer, I feel the need to advise a person looking for a relatively simple, enjoyable reading experience, this was not always the case for me.

According to Wikipedia, in The Guardian Unlimited named "Housekeeping" one of the greatest novels of all time. Years ago I had set upon a quest to read the greatest novels ever written. I found there are many such lists with some, but really little, consensus. I have read hundreds of novels pursuing this quest. With the greatest possible respect to Miss Robinson, this novel does not make my list, although it is a really quality work. It may be simply too sophisticated for me.

Thank You This is a very intimate book about two girls who struggle to adapt to the death of their mother, and to life with the errant aunt who comes in to care for them. It is a lush journey through the eyes of one of the girls, who is drawn to her aunt's unconventional spirit and lust for adventure, even as the town circles with disapproval for a confrontation we know must come. It is a slow read, with beautiful language that you must mull over and savor, and I was reminded of my own childhood as I was invited to inhabit the interior of Ruth so completely that I had the sensation I could follow the thoughts taking shape there.

Know why I bought this book? Because it is lovely on so many levels. It sits in your palms like a reverential volume, like a bible you found in a hotel room on the eve of despair that made things make a little more sense and sat in your pocket where you could touch it and receive some sort of comfort. It's a calm, soothing, intelligent book.

Her words are like watching cream being poured into a glass coffee cup. They are beautiful and rich. It's like eating shortbread--you might not do it all the time, but when you do, you do it slowly, trying to remember how it tastes and feels. Read it for the extraordinary calm of reading it.
