Rich, complex, and pulsing with urban life: While the story is narrated in the third person and is focused on Mevlut, the voices of various characters break into the narrative and expand the story from their own perspective.

In many hands this could be a wonky device—but not with Pamuk.

Pamuk has already proved what a great miniaturist he is in earlier novels. Here, too, his eye for detail cannot be ignored. And if you have already read Pamuk, then do read this one too. The master storyteller may still surprise you. A Strangeness in My Mind is a pensive, intimate, critical. When I learned three years ago that Pamuk was writing a long novel about forty years of history, witnessed through the eyes of an Istanbul street vendor, the prospect sounded as delicious as a glass of Turkish tea.

This magnificent novel was a joy to read; I hated for it to end. Not only does Pamuk give us a fascinating history of modern Istanbul but he weaves it in among the threads of one citizen's story -- a street vendor who never quite succeeds as a business man but who is nevertheless an emotional success as a human being. Pamuk's love for Istanbul has been a theme in much of his work and in A Strangeness in My Mind he captures the very essence of the city.

He also captures what being Turkish means to those who dwell inside the country's borders. For anyone who is interested in the various aspects of the Muslim influence in modern Turkey the novel is also informative. The most salient feature of Pamuk's writing skill is its resemblance to Chekov's atmospheric magic: The novels of Pamuk, winner of the Nobel Prize, are known for complex, dark interwoven stories with layers of cultural and political themes that drive away the vast American reading public.

Mevlut accepts and enjoys his struggling daily life as he meekly avoids the sturm of politics and confrontation of corruption, quietly nodding agreeably or closing his eyes, in his mind seeing himself as one thing but presenting himself differently.

The story follows Mevlut from age 13 to His father and he are part of the massive post-war migration from the eastern rural villages, both communist-atheist Kurds and Muslim Turks, mixing with the nationalists and secularists of Istanbul when the city grew from three million to thirteen million.

Pamuk plays with the theme of determinism: It focuses more on the single character and his wife trying to survive a changing world. A meek man, Mevlut, like most people in the world, is concerned about the survival and love of his family. He is not a political man, although politics swirl around him daily, or a devout Muslim, but he culturally follows the traditions of Islam and turns to religion during his periods of stress and tragedy.

Mevlut thus becomes the common man in the Middle-East, ignoring or accepting the corruption, the human rights violations in the name of crime prevention and stability, the lack of freedom of speech in the name of nationalism, the subtle repression of women, even by a once secular state.

I found myself skimming some parts but still mesmerized by the compelling story. Great book to enjoy the depth of the writing. After reading all Pamuk's books this has the maturity of a writer who loves Istanbul but also looks deep inside human feelings. Stressed out at work? Are the pressures of the world getting you down? But when their mother is mysteriously attacked, the sisters will have to unearth the truth behind the quiet lives their mother has built for them. They will discover a wicked curse that haunts their family line—but will they find that the very magic that bonds them together is destined to tear them apart forever?

Twin sisters Iris and Malina thought they knew how to reverse the ancient curse that haunts their line, the spell that destines them to use their gleams—unique forms of beauty-manipulating magic—to entice and enchant none other than Death himself.

But both sisters thought wrong. Instead of ending the wicked bargain with the power of her infinite bloom, Iris is taken to an exquisite, uncanny realm in between this world and the next—a world Death created for her alone. Left behind with Niko, her girlfriend, and Luka, the boy her sister loves, Lina searches for a way to save Iris. But as Lina unearths the dark secrets that bind her family to parallel fates of loss and immortality and Iris tries to outwit Death on his own terrain, a power resurfaces that even Mara, the original witch mother, fears.
