Have you ever found stories so intriguing and scary with every sentence, as they explore a profoundly disturbing idea, and lay it out in a thoughtfully terrifying way. How about a book which gives you the shivers, or at least make you check the locks twice. Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command.

I found it boring, slow and predictable. The characters weren't likeable and the story just drifted along until the anticlimactic end. If you love a good haunted house story then this is for you. Yes we've all watched poltergeist, house on haunted hill and the Amityville horror but this book is fun! The ghost reminds me a little of Rasputin, the set is nothing that unusual but the paranormal investigators who are central to the story really pull everything together because they clash so much.

The scientist, the medium and the non believer all have opposing views on how and why the house has been haunted. The theme of faith and lack of faith strongly pulls the narrative together with just enough shock and violence to keep even the most robust readers satiated.

I had to organize my thoughts because I both loved and hated this book. Some people on Goodreads asked if it was like The Haunting of Hill House which I read last year and hated and until the last chapter, I would have said yes.

That's the part of the book I hated most. Edith and Florence are portrayed as being flaky, or mentally unstable but the author treats them both differently. We see most of the influences on Florence, even seeing that she might be deluding herself, while Edith seems to be going crazy on her own, without any outside influences.

Her past seems to be behind all the bizarre behaviour she now exhibits, even though she's been able to keep her emotions in check for literally decades The author doesn't play fair with the reader. Florence has conversations with Daniel that we aren't privy to And when Barrett is attacked in the sauna room, he largely ignores the entire incident for the rest of the book even though it goes against all his theories and should have been deeply disturbing to him, given his convictions.

Benjamin Franklin Fischer barely exists for the first two thirds of the book, except as another body in the room. I suspect the overt sexuality was added because this book was written at the tail end of the sixties and the sexual revolution broadened the horizons of writers and film makers much to the detriment of the era in my opinion.

To me it was unnecessary, and equating sexual urges with evil is to my thinking biblical, ancient, and wrong. The last third of the book makes up for the first two. Lots of action, excitement and even a little fear. Some quibbles.

I thought Belasco was still too powerful to be talked out of existence, and it would have been nice to see Belasco's body destroyed and the secret room sealed up to prevent the return of the evil energies. Taking place the week from December 18th to Christmas Eve , I kept this book back so I could read it in the season and the last line had a real kick. A decent horror story that uses extreme acts to shock the reader more than scare them. The excessive use of the grotesque almost takes away from the fear that could be inspired in the reader.

Not chilling, but worth reading for any fan of horror books or for any fan of the macabre. I found it really stereotypical of a haunted mansion book. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all.

For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townfolks refer to it as the Hell House.
