The first few chapters made me curious enough to go further, another few ones made me want to drop and throw something. I was pissed that I still had no clue why he kidnapped her. I put it aside to read something else before I went back to read it.
I disliked the book when I started, I ended up loving it when I finished. The writing style when it was first person was easy to read. But when the author switched it to third person, it was hard to read and distracting at some point; when she switched POV she did it with out a pause. I had to when back a sentence to be certain that it indeed changed POV.
Fans of Colleen Hoover will love this one! You have to reconfigure yourself, rework your wiring, so you can get out of bed in the morning.
Author Leylah Attar is new to me but she packs a punch! All I can say is WOW! I honestly didn't know what to expect with this book and my kindle kind of picked it for me so I decided to take a chance and read it and I am so glad that I did. Very rarely do you read a new author and a book that really leaves you with a huge book hangover. From the moment that I read the very cryptic blub about the book, I was intrigued.
The reader has an up front seat to her thought process as she is kidnaped and how she responds to abuse. I am not sure, as a reader that I would have behaved the same way that she did.
The book mentions Stockholm syndrome several times but I don't feel that Skye actually has that.
Instead she has a bone crushing, mind numbing belief that all people are inherently good given the chance. What is so beautiful about this book is that as a reader, I was actually rooting for her even if I didn't always agree with her decisions. Lovers of Colleen Hoover books will love this one because it has some dark elements to it that Colleen fans are so in love with. This book was, at times, difficult to read because it had some dark issues involved in it, but it was so beautifully written that I could not imagine putting it down.
I cannot wait to read more from this very talented author! If I had read this book first, that would not have been the case. I am willing to go to dark places with complex characters crated by skilled authors.
While I would run screaming from anti-heroes in real life, they make interesting book boyfriends. The pinky finger incident is a pretty big deal. It is hard to have a kidnapper mutilate his victim and then have them morph into lovers. It certainly sends a horrific message that staying with someone who is abusive to you is okay because they really love you. I would have preferred a slower, more subtle build in how Skye views Damian. The author hits us over the head repeatedly with references to Stockholm Syndrome.
We get it. Having Warren, who had been a cartel money launderer for decades, morph into a good guy at the end was disappointing. It is not believable, given his attitude toward 'the help' that he would have gone back looking for Esteban. While Sierra was totally endearing, having her traipse around after school for hours in the home of a strange man is kind of creepy.

The author lets Skye off the hook by saying that Sierra didn't like babysitters. Too bad! How about at least calling your young daughter at home to ensure she is there?
