It was so inspiring to read about how each individual had a personal encounter with God - quite a few of these revivalists had been brought up in Christian homes, but only were truly transformed later in life.
I like how the author doesn't just deliver the facts but explains what each of them underwent and ties it to specific Bible verses. One thing that struck me was how people like the Wesley brothers knew about God but only entered into a personal relationship with him after much struggle.
As the author pointed out, we are to work out our salvation "with fear and trembling" Philippians 2: Another major thing I discovered is that every revival has been accompanied by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
I've always thought that this started only with the Pentecostal movement so I was really excited by this. It also affirms what I've been taught - ministry can only be deep and effective when you have the Holy Spirit.
I'm especially inspired by Charles Finney's story. He started reading the Bible while he was studying law as he noticed that many writers quoted the Bible as an authority for principles of common law. This led him to start attending church and prayer meetings, during which he was convicted of his state as a sinner in need of salvation.
However, he was very troubled by how people prayed but never seemed to receive answers. But he was in such anguish about his soul that he cried out to God. And God answered, filling with him so much love and peace that drove out all doubt, and baptised him in the Holy Spirit - he described it as "waves and waves of liquid love" and being filled from head to toe. Such an amazing and powerful conversion!
These people all pursued God doggedly and were used mightily by Him - I want to be like that.

Love this one in the Gods Generals series too! I pray that more of us are as brave to accept the call to share the Gospel as these men and women were and are. I read the one on Kathryn Karhlum and now Billy Graham. I have always been fascinated with the both of them. The power of the Holy Spirit that seem to empower them when they speak. Now that I am older that message is still just as powerful today. Mar 19, Caryl rated it it was amazing Shelves: Roberts Liardon concisely describes each of these General's ministry.

Dan Simmons. Editorial Reviews Amazon. Shaara captures the disillusionment of both Lee and Hancock early in their careers, Lee's conflict with loyalty, Jackson's overwhelming Christian ethic and Chamberlain's total lack of experience, while illustrating how each compensated for shortcomings and failures when put to the test. The perspectives of the four men, particularly concerning the battles at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, make vivid the realities of war. Like father, like son?
The publisher is aggressively linking Shaara's first novel with The Killer Angels, the bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the Battle of Gettysburg by his father, Michael Shaara d. Indeed, the son's book is a prequel to the father's, following some of its central characters, generals all, from until and Gettysburg. The good news is that, while not matching his father's beautifully wrought prose, Shaara tells a tale impressive in its sweep, depth of character and historic verisimilitude.
Lee for the South. The story is told from their points of view, along with that of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. Each is a reluctant warrior who emerges as a gifted soldier possessed of a strong moral conscience in a time of bitter partisanship and hatred.
Because it covers five eventful years, the narrative is sometimes overwhelmed by its wealth of dramatic material; the battles, though convincingly realized, tend to blur into one another. Yet, like his father, Shaara gets deeply into the minds of his protagonists, particularly Stonewall Jackson, who, though shy and deeply religious, proved to be a brutally efficient military leader.
Not quite, but the Shaara genes, it seems, are in fine shape.

That book was a Civil War novel about the Battle of Gettysburg that also went on to be a high grossing film. This book was good in many aspects, but I also found it a bit lacking in places.
This story begins in the days leading up to the Civil War and concludes roughly three years later before the Battle of Gettysburg. Our story focuses mainly on two officers from each side of the war. It should be pointed out the Joshua Chamberlain was, in fact, a Colonel. It tries to go in depth of the lives of these four men. Such interludes can wear thin after a while. I tend to be in the minority, however. To each their own, however.

There were good parts, I felt, but I felt it was a bit weighed down too much in the areas I mentioned. Lee was offered command of the Union army when the conflict broke out, yet turned it down as he felt his loyalties should like with his home state of Virginia.
It also should be pointed out that much of the stories told between the battles are speculation. I felt that I knew these men much better after reading this novel regardless as to how exact the tale was when compared to the facts. I imagine most, like me, will enjoy it even if you may be left with some reservations. Michael Shaara wrote "Killer Angels" a historical novel about the leaders of the Battle of Gettysburg.
