I really tried to give this book a shot. I didn't expect anything too in-depth, just wanted a basic Exchange book to learn the overall functionality of the system. It was off to a slow start - the book offers in-depth step-by-step instructions on how to install Windows Server , how to design and implement Active Directory, how to deploy DNS.

I guess you have to fill pages with something. I just moved past those parts and was glad that it didn't go into how to build a physical server. I found it a bit odd that Chapter 5 talks about how to configure certificates in an Exchange environment before you even get to installing Exchange Chapter 6 , but once again - I just followed along hoping that the good part was just about to start. Well, that hope never materialized. Chapter 6 ended abruptly with a list of post-installation tasks: Add additional accepted domains.
Configure the default email address policy. Configure an SSL certificate. Configure external URLs. Configure Outlook Anywhere authentication methods. What happened to the detailed step-by-step instructions that filled the previous pages of the book??? Once again - the chapter offers detailed step by step instructions on how to seize FSMO roles of your domain controllers for a test environment very odd subject to cover, but ok It then offers an option to setup a brand new Active Directory Forest and Domain for the migration of your production environment - who does that???
Then there is the general rah-rah of how important it is to test everything in a lab.
Some brief instructions on how to actually move mailboxes and public folders follow the only actually useful part of the chapter. But that's all - the chapter mentions that you are supposed to "present mailboxes with a referral to the OWA server requiring a second logon" but says nothing about how that's accomplished. There is nothing about logistics of setting up coexistence between two environments during transition or testing mailflow, switching mail routing to the new CAS server - seemingly important subjects.

Public folders migration is covered but public folder coexistence during migration is not as it turned out - there is a separate chapter later in the book covering public folders including migrations; this information would have been useful as part of the chapter on actual transition to The rest of the book follows suit - you'll get an introduction to the Exchange Admin Console midway through the book after working with it for at least half a dozen chapters. Journaling and retention are covered extensively in two separate chapters with a lot of overlap and repetition likely written by two different authors who didn't bother to check out each others chapters.
There is no rhyme or reason to the way the entire book is structured overall - don't expect it to guide you through a logical path and don't expect chapters to build on previous chapters.
It's more of a random incomplete collection of chapters somehow tied in to Exchange - some more relevant than others, some more technical than others, some going as far as covering PowerShell, others staying on the surface and filling pages with dictionary definitions of what "New" and "Delete" buttons do.
Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This book is not deep at all on the most important topics and spends way too much time going over the history of products.
This of course is the problem with buying books written before the release of a product. If you want something deep, download the free Microsoft help file and wait for other books. This book was sort of a random jumble of Exchange topic overviews.
It doesn't really have any kind of flow to it and really doesn't tell you anything. I can't imagine a scenario where you know so little about Exchange that you need this book, and that you would actually dive into Exchange based on it's teaching.
If you are a manager of an Exchange group this would be a good read so you have a little bit of a idea what your what your employees are talking about. More than useless really, save your money.
I had read other reviews on this book that went on to discuss the needless explantion on things like moving FSMO roles etc, quite true, it's covered here in this book. Looks like they had to fill pages with something. I would doubt this was written from first hand practical experience. I am now awaiting delivery of Inside Out by Tony Redmond with hopes.
