His kingdom is ripe for attack by the neighboring country of Avenia and the cutthroat Pirates, and his enemies want him off the throne and replaced by a regent.
On the night after the funeral for his entire family, Jaron does the impossible. By sneaking out of the country and reclaiming his former identity as Sage, he pretends to be a young thief and, with the help of Fink, a street urchin, he infiltrates the ranks of the enemy Pirates and gains their trust.
Through cunning, sarcasm, and superhuman feats of swordplay, Jaron hopes to defeat the Pirates and weaken the alliance between them and the enemy country of Avenia. Although the adventure is exciting, Jaron is almost too amazingly cunning and strong; he has a broken leg and other injuries but manages to defeat the best swordsman.
Charlie McWade narrates this amazing tale adequately; he tends to emphasize vowels and differentiate among male voices very slightly, which can be confusing during tight dialogue. Although the plot seems forced at times, and Jaron is almost too good to be true, the adventure is exciting enough to keep listeners engaged, and ready for the third installment.

Jaron, aka Sage, is new to his throne and surrounded by intrigue in this follow-up to The False Prince As jammed with action and violent swordplay as its predecessor, the plot takes the headstrong Jaron into a pirate stronghold where dangers increase steeply as the young king, in disguise, wrestles with saving his kingdom.
Needless to say, he is always, almost fatally true to his character—stubborn and determined to do things on his own. The ending introduces a cliff-hanger of a new threat and will leave fans clutching their skulls.

Following on the heels of the events of "The False Prince", the saga of Jaron continues. In "The Runaway King", threats come from a neighboring country that could mean the end of Carthya, and Jaron, in that particularly stubborn style that he has, insists in running to ensure that, not only will he keep the throne, but that his nation is safe.
Now, to ensure that I don't add too many potential spoilers, I'll keep it brief.
Jaron and I split on what exactly a King should do. A King must always put his nation first, and it seems more than likely that Jaron may not be willing to do this. This is simply a matter of opinion on my part. Other than that minor issue, this was an absolutely stunning sequel, with twists, turns, and one of my favorite historical groups, Pirates!
I look forward to reading "The Shadow Throne", for the final chapter of Jaron and his journey. Hardcover Verified Purchase. Reader thoughts: I expected to be amazed, which is always dangerous with a book I want so badly to like. The first is still my favorite of the three because there are the most reveals. I started to get used to Jaron's way of keeping secrets from the reader by the end of the trilogy, and, while I was still impressed with his cleverness, I was less surprised.
Now, the Runaway King shows Jaron with more responsibility and even more readiness to sacrifice everything to save those he loves, which happens to include his entire kingdom. He's quite the gambler and repeatedly throws all into the conflict to gain the world or lose it. I just love that he has no trouble putting his life on the line for anyone he cares about, even those he just met.
I also love an MC in pain. Jaron is always getting injured and pushing through to resolve the conflict despite the pain of, say, a broken leg. Writer thoughts: These stories are so well crafted.
Somehow, readers get a sense of the outside world the commoners, the other kingdoms, etc. Even Jaron's encounter with thieves toward the beginning turns into a main plot point later. It is clear that JN has a plan going and each scene accomplishes three or four things. Master storytelling, and in one of the funnest voices, too next to Connwaer's in The Magic Thief and Alcatraz Smedry's.
He may have taken his rightful place on the throne, but Sage - now known to be the long lost prince Jaron - still has many problems ahead. Roden, the brilliant swordsman who used to be his friend, has joined the vicious pirates of Tarblade Bay, while the evil king of Avania, Vargan, threatens invasion and war to Carthya.

And, to Jaron's dismay, even those within his own kingdom are quickly turning against him. Desperate, he flees the kingdom, to take the defense of his country into the only hands he believes capable - his own.
Book two of the Ascendance Trilogy is one of the few sequels that overshadows its predecessor. But Runaway is truly a masterpiece, filled with emotion and the wild-fully childish behavior of Jaron, who, in many ways, is still the thief he used to be.
He is as masterful, funny and brave as before, even though the odds are even worse in this tale than in False. Just weeks after Jaron has taken the throne, an assassination attempt forces him into a deadly situation. Rumors of a coming war are winding their way between the castle walls, and Jaron feels the pressure quietly mounting within Carthya. Soon, it becomes clear that deserting the kingdom may be his only hope of saving it.
But the further Jaron is forced to run from his identity, the more he wonders if it is possible to go too far. Will he ever be able to return home again? Or will he have to sacrifice his own life in order to save his kingdom? The stunning second installment of The Ascendance Trilogy takes readers on a roller-coaster ride of treason and murder, thrills and peril, as they journey with the Runaway King.
