This book drove me insane.

Java The Complete Reference, 8th Edition

My tutor hated it as well. The exercises you were required to do for school work were rarely explained well enough to even understand what was wanted from you. My teacher extended each assignment by 2 weeks because every student interpreted what the assignments wanted differently. This meant he had to have one on on sessions with over 60 people each week.

Thank god for code academy. I honestly feel that I learned nothing from this book after chapter 3.

I was learning from this book alone and found it to be extremely difficult to grasp some concepts, as they honestly sometimes wrote, "Just look this up online and it will tell you how to use this. If I wanted to just look up how to learn Java online, I wouldn't have bothered reading the book. In all, alright. Not the best book to learn from though.

A few years ago while struggling to learn C from all the typical theory-heavy C books lacking in exercises, I stumbled upon her "Microsoft Visual C An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming" book. After going through all the You Do Its, Debugging exercises, and end-of-chapter exercises, concepts started to gel, and my exercise solutions were doing what Ms. Farrell requested in each exercise.

Farrell's books for helping me establish a good foundation and overcoming the difficult start up period lots of people go through. My current job requires me to switch to Java, and I was happy to discover that she has a similar book to the C book I purchased a few years ago: Java Programming, 8th edition. The book is laid out in the same manner as her C book, and, most importantly of all, the exercises look to have been improved upon. There are You Do It exercises in between chapter concepts, where Ms.

Farrell provides you a working solution and provides explanations for the code. There are debugging exercises where she provides you code containing errors and it's your job to figure out where the errors are.

There are end of chapter exercises that thoroughly test the material you covered in the chapter. There are Game exercises where you get to build small games based on what you covered in the chapter. Finally, there are excellent end of chapter Case exercises where you start out building small programs for two fictitious companies, Carly's Catering and Sammy's Seashore Supplies, and at the end of each chapter you add more and more functionality to each company's program.

In my humble opinion, these exercises are key to establishing a good foundation from which you can gain the experience and confidence necessary to reach the next level. I learned much more from the internet than this book.
