As a lover of Japanese culture, especially the 'forbidden world,' this book provided insight of what a life was like for a gangster's family.
This book isn't about what a life is like for a yakuza This is about a woman's life as a yakuza's daughter as the title states , which was just as interesting to me. You can tell how much the yakuza lifestyle has affected Shoko's family and her own lifestyle.
You can see how much her father's lifestyle haunted her in various ways. It's crazy how our families can cause create our path in life - at first, that is. Then you can see how Shoko overcomes her obstacles and created her own path. The way this was written was very straight-forward and raw. It was incredibly refreshing. Actually, I'm going to read this book again today! Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.
I enjoyed this accounting, although the writing style was very, very elementary. I want to attribute it to it being a translation but other than that the book was good, very raw, and very honest. A lot of it was difficult to digest because of the graphic depictions of drug use, rape, and abuse toward Shoko but that didn't detract from the overall story. One person found this helpful. Hardcover Verified Purchase. I was at first expecting an inside view on Japanese crime and it's hold on Japan, but I found neither.
I did find however a very raw story of someone's life, their struggle with addiction, their lives ups and down, and relationships that were far from normal.
Tho I did not agree with Shoko's decision of leaving her supportive husband for shallow reasons, but that in't my place to judge. The book is good, straight forward, and doesn't contain boring fluff. You will more than likely finish it in a day if you read straight through but it is a well spent day. It's been a couple of years since I read this book but I did enjoy reading it. Not much is given about the inner workings of the Yakuza, it mostly follows Shoko and her life with her father involvement in the organization.
She's made some really bad choices in life according to this book and didn't really express any remorse from those choices. I wish she would publish a followup to this book so we can see how her life has turned out now that she's a little bit wiser.
This is a beautiful, heartwrenching book. Shoko Tendo bares her soul, her relationships, desires, addictions, failures, losses, and left me absolutely stunned at the hardships and transformation she endured living deep in the yakuza underworld. When I finished "Yakuza Moon," a quote I read elsewhere sprang to mind: Memoirs of a Grangster's Daughter. I read this book as part of a group assignment for my English class. I chose to read this book because it looked like it would be an interesting read, and it was.
I had a hard time putting it down once I started. The book is about the life of a Japanese Mobster's daughter and the life she lived in her teens and early adulthood. The author writes it like it was how her life was affected by the choice of lifestyle her father lived. How at the age of 12 she became a dropout and her life of sex, drugs, and abuse begins. It's really sad to see how someone can be dragged into that type of lifestyle and how drugs can consume you and put you at risk of being a victim.
She kept getting herself into relationships where she would get beaten up, you would think that she would have learned her lesson early on but I guess she wanted someone to love her or care for her or maybe protect her. In the circle of people she lived in she was not going to find that and she later realizes that. It was an easy read, a bit gruesome with the detail she gave but it was what kept you into the book.
I would recommend this book to anyone. If you're looking for something to read that is different then your ordinary happy ending story, then look no further this is your book.
This book was a great read! I finished it in one day. This book provided great detail and insight to the author's life and her experiences. I would recommend to any and every one!
