Sally Slater is the author of Paladin, a fantasy adventure novel that has garnered over 11 million reads on Wattpad, and now a 1 bestseller Paladin is her debut.
Brash, cocky, and unbeatable with a sword well, almost , Sam of Haywood is the most promising Paladin trainee in the kingdom of Thule… and knows it. But Sam has never held much interest in playing damsel-in-distress, and so she rescues herself from a lifetime of boredom and matrimonial drudgery. Pity that Tristan Lyons, the Paladin assigned to train her, is none other than the hero of her childhood. Sam is not the only trainee hiding secrets: Braeden is a half-demon with a dark past that might be unforgivable.
All in all a good book, I would read book 2. Ok so it was hard to decide which gent I loved more. I got quite literally sucked into this book. Sam is fierce and strong and tho innocent to a point it in no way weakens her.
I absolutely loved Sam. I liked her at the beginning and by the end realized that she is just friggin BA! Tristen is loyal and charming and I loved him and I can't wait to see what is in his future! Braeden is fierce and swoon worthy. His demonic side only makes me like him that much more because he has to fight extra hard to reign in his urges but his does so whilst fighting for his new friends.
I couldn't decide which way I wanted Sam to go initially but by the end I was so in love with the way it ended. Can't wait for book two! Paperback Verified Purchase. Fun, well-written, engaging.
I would definitely recommend this read for both adults and young adults. Includes a dose of romance. The romantic scenes are as passionate as the sword clashing fights. The characters will tug at your heart strings for their strengths as well as their weaknesses. The quality of the writing may not be breathtaking, but it is solidly without flaw and compels the reader forward. While some of the story may be derivitive and even, at times, a little corny, the book is definitely enjoyable and will leave you wanting the author to write more books.
Plot very minor spoilers: In order to train as a demon slaying Paladin, Sam must hide that she is a girl and certainly that she is the missing daughter of duke. She becomes the trainee of Paladin Lyons, the top swordsman, along with Braedan, a half demon who has many talents of his own, but faces much discrimination.
The interpersonal relationship between the three is full of ups and downs in this intriguing tale as they become a powerful combination against demons. Absolutely fantastic! I enjoyed this novel from beginning to end.

Sam was a fantastic character. Brave, loyal, feisty. Her story kept me enthralled from beginning to end. Ms Slater did an excellent job of introducing shadowy villains while not making anything too clear. I had my suspicions as to how things would turn out, which were not that far off, but I confess I was still thrown for a loop when all the masks were finally removed. I highly recommend this book to lovers of fantasy with a strong female lead, no angst, a bit of romance but no love triangles, and a story that leaves you looking forward to the next without leaving you hanging from a cliff.
I will most definitely be purchasing the next book - I am assuming there is one!!!!! The basic plot of this fantasy novel is that a young noble woman, Lady Samantha Sam Haywood disguises herself as a boy to join an elite force called the Paladins that fight demons. When Sam goes for Paladin training she is assigned Tristan Lyons to be her trainer.
I admit that I had a large mental eye roll when I read the young woman dresses as a man to become a fighter, and almost put the book down. Glad that I continued to read, the story was not as predictable as I expected. The author managed to suspend my disbelief and I got caught up in the story. The interaction between the characters is excellent. The ending is good, but is left open for a sequel.

Tristan shot it down with the bow he had slung over his shoulder. It fell to the ground in a small back clump. Braeden prodded the creature with his boot. Just a bat. They were all too tense, even he. Shutting his eyes, Braeden released the first mental shield that kept the demons out of his mind. He felt their tug at the edges. Braeden drew a knife and sliced into his skin, letting the thrall of the demons carry him.

Their savagery lured him in like a fish, and he took the bait, following the line back to the source. He walked with eyes closed, as if under a compulsion, but he held on to the part of him that was human and kept it safe.
Braeden opened his eyes. He had led them into the mountains, to the top of a narrow pass between two near-vertical rocky faces. The ground was covered with layers of stones and pebbles, and the chalky path beneath them was worn and well-traversed. The pass glimmered with flecks of silver and gold under the light of the half-moon. Braeden put his finger to his lips. Something rattled and buzzed, and he could pick up a faint humming.
The first of them are a short distance away now. Braeden pointed up. Three oversized worms, with spiked tails and shovel-shaped heads, slinked down the sides of the mountain from above, leaving behind a slimy secretion that glowed a faint green in the dark.

Can you tell, Braeden? Braeden tapped the corner of his eye.
